The Northern Netherlands and England
Under Philip II, the foreign policy became better for expansion purposes. Because of this, he wanted to regain control of the northern part of the Netherlands. As a result of his wish to acquire the Northern Netherlands, many Protestants were persecuted that lived in the Netherlands, because we already know that Philip II was against Protestantism. Elizabeth began helping the Protestant people by sending English soldiers out. In February of 1587, Mary Stuart (pictured above)was executed after Elizabeth agreed to it. Philip II was hoping that Mary would become queen of England, but that was obviously not going to happen at this point. In conclusion, Philip II decided to get rid of Elizabeth and conquer England.
Modern Day U.S. and the Philippine Islands
During Philip II's rule, he conquered colonies in the modern day United States and the Philippine Islands. Actually, the Philippine Islands are named after Philip II.
Overall, most of the expansion of Spain and Portugal took place prior to when Philip II became king, but he did exapand into England, the Northern Netherlands, the Philippine Islands, and modern day United States.
